Carson National Forest closing area roads Dec. 30

Posted

The Carson National Forest will be closing and locking gates on forest roads Dec. 30.

Many of the roads have seasonal closures because they are located in areas that are designated as wildlife wintering areas. The gates will remain locked until May 1.

Forest roads 442 (U.S. Hill), 703 (Amole Canyon cross-country ski area) and 439 have been closed early for public safety, say officials.

Some roads have already received large amounts of snow and are icy and dangerous.

Forest officials request that those people who do plan on traveling on the remaining open forest roads use extreme caution, as recent snows and rain in the area have made travel dangerous. Many forest roads are narrow and travelers should use the appropriate speed for conditions. Travelers should carry a map of the area, a flashlight, tools and matches to start a fire if stranded. The vehicle should be in good working order and have appropriate tires and chains for snow.
